  1. The night was forecast to be NW14 winds and diminishing. Instead we saw winds as high as 28 knots apparent (first unwind leg) and large waves (incoming tides against north winds). It was basically a match race against Picante (J/109). We had a great strategy to start closer to the gas dock and head to the first mark (the summer start mark) because all the J/24’s that started at the pin kept getting rounded up in the high winds. It worked great till we got a visual on the mark and realized we sailed to a yellow mooring and had to really bear off and rounded just behind Picante.

Then long downwind leg to G1 just south of Goat Island. The crew collectively called “wing-on-wing” and we got to sail straight to the mark and Picante was zigging (like they had an asymmetrical). Relatively short upwind leg back to Rose Island. Then DDW back to Goat Island and then longer tacking leg back to the finish line. Eric did a great job on the mainsail – – he was able to avoid any round ups and kept the boat on the proper heal.

We beat Picante by 3:34 and corrected to win by 6:04.
